Why People in Kittitas County Are Finally Fixing Their Smiles With Veneers

Veneers have a reputation problem. Most people associate them with Hollywood smiles or reality TV teeth, the kind that look almost too perfect. That puts a lot of people off before they even ask about them. They assume veneers are vain, expensive, or only for people who want a complete transformation.

Here is the truth: veneers are one of the most practical cosmetic options we offer at Central Washington Dental Care. They are not just for people who want a dramatic Hollywood smile. A lot of our patients use them to fix one or two teeth that have bothered them for years.

What veneers actually are

Porcelain veneers are thin shells of dental ceramic that bond to the front of your natural teeth. Think of them like a custom-fitted cover. They are not full crowns, which encase the entire tooth. They are facings, designed to change how the front of the tooth looks while leaving most of the natural tooth structure intact.

The porcelain we use today is incredibly durable and reflects light the same way natural enamel does. When done well, you cannot tell a veneer from a natural tooth.

What veneers actually fix

Here is what veneers are good at:

Chips and cracks. Maybe you chipped a tooth on a hockey stick in college. Or you fell off a bike when you were a kid and the corner of your front tooth has been off ever since. A veneer can rebuild that tooth without grinding it down for a crown.

Stubborn staining. Some staining responds well to professional whitening. But certain types of stains, especially intrinsic stains from medications like tetracycline or from trauma to a tooth, do not bleach out. Veneers cover them completely.

Minor gaps. If you have a small gap between two front teeth and you do not want to do orthodontics, two veneers can close the gap quickly.

Slightly misshapen teeth. Some people have a tooth that is a little smaller than the others, or one that came in at an odd angle. Veneers can reshape it to match.

Worn-down teeth. As we age, the front teeth can wear down from grinding or just from decades of use. Veneers can restore the original length and shape.

What veneers do not fix

Veneers are not a fix for major bite problems, severely crooked teeth, or significant decay. If your teeth need orthodontic work, do that first. (We have a post on Invisalign that walks through clear aligner options.) If a tooth is decayed, that needs to be addressed before any cosmetic work.

Veneers also are not the right choice for patients who grind their teeth heavily, unless we can address the grinding first with a night guard. Heavy grinding can crack porcelain veneers over time.

What the process looks like

Step one is a consultation. We look at your teeth, talk about what is bothering you, and discuss what is realistic. Sometimes patients come in wanting veneers and what they actually need is a different solution. I will tell you straight if I do not think veneers are the right call.

If we decide to move forward, the next visit involves preparing the teeth. We remove a very thin layer of enamel from the front of the tooth, just enough to make room for the veneer. This is usually about half a millimeter. We take impressions and send them to a dental lab that custom-makes your veneers.

You wear temporary veneers for a couple of weeks while the permanent ones are being made. The temporaries protect your prepped teeth and let you preview the new look.

At the final visit, we bond the permanent veneers in place. The bonding process is what makes veneers strong. Properly bonded porcelain veneers become essentially fused to your natural tooth.

Total process: usually two to three appointments over a few weeks.

Do they look fake

Not when they are done well. Modern porcelain veneers are made to reflect light the same way natural teeth do. The lab matches the color, translucency, and texture of the porcelain to your existing teeth or to whatever shade you have agreed on.

The most common reason veneers look fake is when patients ask for them to be too white or too uniform. A natural smile has subtle variations in color and shape between teeth. Veneers that are perfectly matched and blindingly white read as obviously cosmetic. Good cosmetic dentistry looks like a great natural smile, not a different smile.

How long do veneers last

With good care, porcelain veneers last 10 to 20 years. Some last longer. The veneer itself is durable and stain-resistant. The main reasons veneers fail are trauma (biting something hard, getting hit in the mouth), grinding, or the bond breaking down over time.

You take care of veneers the same way you take care of your natural teeth. Brush, floss, and come in for regular cleanings. Avoid using your front teeth as tools, like opening packages or biting fingernails.

Cost considerations

Veneers are an investment. Cost varies based on how many you are doing and what materials are used, but a single porcelain veneer typically runs in the four-figure range. Most insurance plans do not cover veneers because they are considered cosmetic, though some plans cover veneers used to repair damaged teeth.

We are transparent about pricing before any work begins. You will know exactly what you are paying for and why.

If you have been thinking about veneers for a while, come in and we can look at whether they make sense for you. Sometimes the answer is yes. Sometimes the answer is whitening first, or orthodontics, or a different approach entirely. We will give you the honest take.
